It’s been decades since vermouth was last in vogue and the fortified botanical wine is well and truly making its comeback in 2017. Australia’s first native vermouth, Regal Rogue, is leading the way with their easy drinking vermouth, made from 100% Australian wine blended with aromatic indigenous herbs and spices.
Globally, vermouth sales grew by 29% in 2016, expanding the annual market to over 23 million 9 litre cases. Craft vermouth is now produced not only from the traditional fortified wine making European countries such as France, Spain and Italy, but also from Australia, UK and all across America and the emerging trend is being noted by the world’s food and beverage connoisseurs.
For a long time now vermouth has been incorrectly labelled a spirit and kept in the liquor cabinet for mixing into cocktails such as Manhattans and Negronis, rather than what it is – a wine. There is now a new overwhelming prominence of vermouth on venues’ drinks lists to be enjoyed as an occasion aperitif or alone as it is in Europe.
Regal Rogue has created a modern, sophisticated evolved vermouth, well and truly worthy of drinking alone. Regal Rogue has be leading the vermouth trend in London, which has seen a number of vermouth specialist bars popping up all over London. Australia also saw its own vermouth bar Banksii open late last year in Sydney’s Barangaroo.
This resurgence in the appreciation of the vermouth category has seen a younger audience switch to drinking the beverage, while also reigniting the tastebuds of the long-time vermouth drinkers who have enjoyed it since the 1940’s.
Regal Rogue is a drinking, or ‘quaffable’ vermouth, produced in four flavourful varietals; Lively White, Daring Dry, Bold Red and Wild Rosé. It’s meant to be principally enjoyed neat over ice, or partnered with tonic as that ‘first drink of the night’, as an alternative to wine or the traditional G&T.
Regal Rogue has a list of easy 3-step mixed drinks that are quick to mix up at home.
